Models of several visual search tasks using the EPIC architecture reveal how, despite contrary empirical evidence, the conventional theoretical wisdom in cognitive psychology has seriously misconstrued the basic mechanisms of vision - ranging from key retinal effects to surprising properties of visual memory. A relatively simple but powerful set of mechanisms in EPIC together with highly task-specific strategies accounts well for several important phenomena. The results provide a good example of how modeling in a computational cognitive architecture modeling can take us beyond the limitations of conventional theorizing, but only if the architecture itself doesn't enforce conventional theorizing.
