Abstract:

How do we perceive clusters or groups of items in a display? In order to better model eye movements it is important to understand whether the layout of a display has an influence on where the eye wants to go next. As a step toward this, a study is being conducted to determine how people tend to segment or group items in a display. This is a large scale study intended to provide good parameters for a quantitative model of perceptual grouping and the data presented will be from a validation study intended to compare these judgments between participants who did the task on paper versus those that did an online version on the computer screen. The work will be discussed within the context of my dissertation work along with future directions.
