My presentation will begin with a brief review of goal setting theory that I developed with Edwin Locke (Locke & Latham, 1990). This is a cognitive theory of motivation in the work place. This discussion will establish why my skepticism bordered on hostility to the priming literature.  I will then discuss programmatic research my doctoral students and I have conducted in laboratory and field settings that led to our transition from skeptics to believers of the positive effects of priming goals on organizational behavior.
