Rennselaer Showcases GameFest 2015 at EMPAC

Troy, NY –An annual tradition continues on May 1st and 2nd when Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute hosts its 12th GameFest 2015 at the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC). GameFest 2015 will feature video game design students from universities across the northeast including Rochester Institute of Technology, Champlain College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Quinnipiac University, Emerson College, Becker College and the NYU Game Center.

James Portnow will be this year’s keynote speaker.  He will present on May 2nd at 4:00 pm in the EMPAC Theater. Best known for writing the web series Extra Credits, James Portnow is a game designer and consultant known for his theories on socially positive design. He received his Masters from Carnegie Mellon’s Entertainment Technology Center, went on to work for Activision as a designer on the Call of Duty series before raising funds to start his own company, Divide by Zero Games. Portnow currently serves as the CEO of Rainmaker Games, a design and consulting firm that has worked with partners from Zynga to Riot Games, in addition to writing the popular Extra Credits and Extra History series.

GameFest is free and open to the public.  The event kicks off at 7:00 pm, Friday, May 1st, with a games research student panel and live electronic music by the PULSE collective. The student-designed video game exhibition will begin at noon on Saturday, May 2nd, in EMPAC.  Awards for the student-designed games will be announced at 5:00 pm.
