Public Lecture - "Artificial Intelligence, Vaal, and God" by Dr. Selmer Bringsjord

October 31, 2013 7:00 PM - 8:20 PM

In the  original Star Trek episode, "The Apple”, Vaal - a manufactured computing machine - was worshipped and idolized by its people. Such idolization and worship seems idiotic, but the Vaals of today are any number of human-manufactured beings increasingly venerated for their amazing intelligence.  Yet these artificial beings derive their intelligence directly from the intelligence of their human creators, in whose image these beings are made.

Thus it seems that some of today’s intellectuals may be in violation of the First and Second of the Ten Commandments - “You shall have no other gods before me," and "You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything ... you shall not bow down to them or worship them".

In this engaging lecture, Dr. Bringsjord discusses recent advances in Artificial Intelligence, and how we may be in danger of venerating them too much.
