Ron Eglash, Associate Professor, Science and Technology Studies and Audrey Bennett, Associate Professor, Language, Literature, and Communication, received the American Anthropological Association's award for Exemplary Cross-Field Scholarship for their article "Culturally Situated Design Tools: Ethno-computing from Field Site to Classroom."
Patricia Search, Professor, Language, Literature, and Communication was elected President, International Visual Literacy Association, the oldest international, not-for-profit association of researchers, educators, designers, media specialists, and artists dedicated to the study and practice of visual literacy.
Research
Clinical Professor Pauline Oliveros, Arts: proposal for A Social Telematic Music Network with enabling tools for the sensory impaired submitted to NSF CreativeIT SOcS. Co PIs Pauline Oliveros, Jonas Braasch, and Jim Hendler.
Dan Shawhan, Assistant Professor, Economics, received a grant: "Scalable and flat controls for reliable power grid operation with high renewable penetration." From the Global Climate and Energy Program at Stanford, which is funded by GE, Toyota, Schlumberger, and Toyota. $580,500 for Rensselaer over three years, including full overhead. The investigators at Rensselaer are Joe Chow (PI), Jian Sun (co-PI), and me (co-PI). I am pleased to have helped the team that includes Rensselaer win this grant, beating five other teams of universities. In addition to contributing substantially to the proposal, I also was glad to be able to fulfill a requirement of the funders, which was to make the team interdisciplinary; all of the other investigators are engineers.

Langdon Winner, Professor, Science and Technology Studies, served as a "scientific expert" commenting upon the first worldwide citizens consultation on September 26, "World Wide Views on Global Warming," an event that linked 4,000 people from 38 countries deliberating and voting on issues to be decided at the climate treaty negotiations in Copenhagen this December.
