I will be focusing on The Moving Wall, the half-scale replica of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial I first encountered at The Corning Preserve in 1995. My interests in it stem primarily from my interest in place, but I have also been looking at it as a device for public memory and memorializing. I just spent four days out at White Pine, MI, winter home of The Moving Wall, and while there I snooped through several of the hundreds of boxes of collected memorabilia The Moving Wall has accrued over its 26 years of touring, as well as several photo albums from each of its years on the road. I will be talking about what I found there, as well as possible ways to proceed with my research in the future, convinced that there is a treasure trove of material out there waiting to be "read." In any event, I will discuss what I found in White Pine, what I think it means, and how The Moving Wall plays out in our collective memory in a way distinct from The Wall in DC.
