The School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) is composed of five departments--Arts; Cognitive Science; Economics; Language, Literature, and Communication; and Science and Technology Studies-each of which takes advantage of the innovative collaborations made possible by the presence of cutting-edge scientific and technological programs in Rensselaer's Schools of Science, Engineering, Management, and Architecture.
HASS academic programs reflect the principles of an education steeped in the traditions of critical thinking associated with the arts, humanities, and social sciences applied to "the common purposes of life" and a focus on tackling the real-world challenges of the 21st century.
Each of our five departments offers degree programs at the Bachelors of Science [B.S.], Masters of Science or Fine Arts [M.S. or M.F.A], or Doctoral [Ph.D.] levels. Dual major opportunities are listed with their associated degrees. The Office of the Dean of HASS also coordinates the School's Interdisciplinary Programs.
