Academics in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences

The School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) is composed of five departments--Arts; Cognitive Science; Economics; Language, Literature, and Communication; and Science and Technology Studies-each of which takes advantage of the innovative collaborations made possible by the presence of cutting-edge scientific and technological programs in Rensselaer's Schools of Science, Engineering, Management, and Architecture.

HASS academic programs reflect the principles of an education steeped in the traditions of critical thinking associated with the arts, humanities, and social sciences applied to "the common purposes of life" and a focus on tackling the real-world challenges of the 21st century.

HASS boasts seven Bachelors of Science; six Masters of Science, one Master of Fine Arts, and one Ph.D. in each of our five departments.  Nearly three-quarters of our undergraduates are enrolled in dual major or interdisciplinary programs, and our graduate student population has doubled from 1998 to 2006.
